People have the power,” the fifth in Nanae Mitobe’s popular series featuring rock stars and musicians, at DIESEL ART GALLERY!
DIESEL ART GALLERY will present “People Have The Power,” a solo exhibition by artist Nanae Mitobe from May 18 (Sat) to July 3 (Wed), 2024.
People Have The Power” is the fifth installment in Nanae Mitobe’s popular series of exhibitions featuring works inspired by rock stars and musicians. Previous exhibitions titled “Rock is Dead,” “War is not over,” “Let’s Have a Dream!” and “Sit-In” have focused on rock symbolism and the power of music.
People Have The Power” will provide viewers with an opportunity to engage in deep thought about the power of individual people, the power of the collective, and the role art and music play in social change.
In addition to the display and sale of the new works, T-shirts and related goods produced in collaboration with DIESEL will be on sale at this exhibition.
CONCEPT
Stars who have left this world are reconsidered and taken up by the news and social issues as time goes by. Since the BLM, inter-minority structures such as gender, race, and colonial history have become important topics for Mitoobe, whose portraits have always depicted minorities.
In “People Have The Power,” the artist features individuals who fought against the Vietnam War, black racism, and public prejudice, as well as those who have left a significant mark on peace activism. Many of the works depicting these fighting people are indirect depictions of images of stars and celebrities in the media, rather than actual direct portrayals of the faces of the subjects. Therefore, the motifs depicted are reproductions via the media, such as magazine covers and record jackets.
The exhibition space is composed of red, a color that represents struggle and passion, with direct “graffiti-like” paintings by Mitobe, so that the entire space intersects with the street culture of Shibuya.
The installation work by DJ booths, which expresses non-violent battles through music and art, is littered with records and musical instruments, evoking scenes of fights and strife. While at times it conveys a tragic situation, it can also be a positive message that stands on the side of those who resist.
