2004/4/5─5/26
Three of Mitobe’s works will be included in the Takahashi Collection Exhibition at the Yamagata Museum of Art.
Born in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, psychiatrist Ryutaro Takahashi began collecting contemporary art in earnest in the 1990s, focusing on young Japanese artists. He has energetically discovered new artists and re-evaluated their works, and his collection of over 3,000 pieces is known as one of the leading contemporary art collections in Japan. This exhibition introduces the roots of Ryutaro Takahashi’s collection, as well as approximately 70 works that reflect the ever-expanding contemporary art in Japan since the year 2000.
The title of the exhibition, “Companions of the Canvas,” reflects Takahashi’s belief that artists, collectors, curators, and all of us are companions to art. It could also be said that this is the very image of Ryutaro Takahashi, who is a contemporary art critic.
Opened in 1964, the Yamagata Museum of Art is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, as an art museum rooted in the local community. We hope you will enjoy the encounter with art that reflects the times and is with us in Yamagata.
