Profile of participating artists

Nanae Mitobe
Nanae Mitobe

Born in Tokyo, Mitobe studied oil painting at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music from 2021, and studied under Alastair Mackinven at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria, from 2022. He paints heavy, thickly coated paintings by boldly grabbing oil paints in a can with his hands. In his early works, he depicted celebrities and pop icons such as Michael Jackson, but a residency in the U.S. in 2014 led him to create the “DEPTH” series of highly abstract, anonymous faces, which he presented in a solo exhibition at the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art in 2016 and in 2020 at the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art in 2020. His first book of works, “Rock is Dead,” will be published in 2022. In recent years, he has been showing his “Rock Star” and “TIME” series, as well as his “Picture Diary” series, which he created during the pandemic period by drawing inspiration from topics on the Internet news. He expresses the times in a bold and original style, sometimes pop, sometimes ironic.
